“He who knows no foreign languages knows nothing of his own.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
“A different language is a different vision of life.” – Federico Fellini
At BDB we believe that languages are accessible for all, as they are key to communication within the global community. Throughout the MFL curriculum, our students will develop their ability and ambition to not only communicate in the target language, but also have an understanding of the different cultures and identities associated with modern foreign languages.
Throughout their languages journey, we will develop our students’ listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. They will be encouraged to develop their ability to communicate confidently and coherently with a native speaker. We place a strong emphasis on foreign language literacy and grammar through the study of various French/Spanish literature texts, poems and songs, which reinforce their English language and literature skills. The use of authentic materials for all four elements of study will deepen students’ knowledge of how language works and enrich their vocabulary, resulting in an increased confidence to use and adapt their language in a wide range of contexts. We support the wider curriculum through the use of further literacy and numeracy skills, including enhancing curriculum content covered in other subjects, most notably English and Geography.
Our vision in the MFL department is to enable all our students to be confident, culturally savvy, resilient and articulate language learners, who are not only challenged in the classroom but are able to contribute to the global community. Modern foreign languages inspires our students to be curious, ambitious and independent well- rounded individuals who can apply languages in all aspects of life, from travel to work.
